The village of Loki on the peninsula of Seram was noted for its excellent cloves. But the villagers refused to co-operate with the VOC and sell their cloves peacefully. In 1656 the Company responded with a ruthless act of revenge: the village was annihilated and all the cloves on the peninsula were burnt. After that trade was out of the question so the VOC closed all its trading posts there.
