Kazimbazar was the site of one of the VOC's principal bases in the Bengal region. This was where the opperkoopman or senior merchant was posted. Silver rupees, the Mogul coinage, were minted here. In addition, Kazimbazar was an important centre for the purchase and manufacture of raw silk, mainly destined for the Japanese market. This base had its own silk factory, run by special silk controllers.
