Makassar, as Ujung Pandang was formerly known, played an important role in intra-Asian trade for some considerable time and as such proved a formidable competitor for Batavia as a trading centre in the early 17th century. The trade centred on cloves, nutmeg and mace imported from the Molucca Islands, Ambon and Banda. From 1607 the VOC had a trading base in Makassar, where it focused initially on trade in cloves.
In the first half of the 17th century Makassar caused considerable problems for the VOC. It supported the rebels on Banda and Ambon who were resisting the VOC. In 1660 the Portuguese, who had been based in Makassar since the 16th century, were defeated by the Company. Gowa's king, under whose dominion Makassar fell, was now forced to sign a peace. Following new disturbances, Cornelis Speelman finally forced the people of Makassar into submission in 1667. As a result of this bloody conquest, Makassar was ceded to the VOC.
Makassar managed to avoid the VOC's monopoly on cloves for a protracted period during the 17th century. Both Asian and European traders could obtain smuggled goods here. After the defeat of Makassar in 1667, this trade finally came to an end. From then on, the clove harvests went solely to the VOC. Although the VOC defeated Makassar in 1667, it was not until the 18th century that the town achieved the status of a colonial administration or 'gouvernement'.
