In 1664 the VOC destroyed all the nut trees on the island which produced nutmeg and mace, in an attempt to stamp out any smuggling; after this, Rozengain became little more than a penal colony. In 1695 the Company decided to replant the island, which was by now virtually unpopulated. All that remained of the population were a few bandits and exiles. Rosengain was also known as 'Bandit Island', with good reason.
