The VOC outpost of Suvali lay to the north of Surat, on the coast. Because of the innumerable sandbanks, the harbour of Surat was only navigable for small vessels. As such Suvali's bay offered a good opportunity to lie at anchor. Due to its situation, from the 17th century onwards Suvali became the gateway for Dutch trade with the Gujarat region.
