In 1682 the sultan of Bacan sold a number of islands to the VOC for 700 rix-dollars, that is, 1750 guilders. On one of these islands, Obi, the VOC built Fort Den Briel. The sultan also received 80 rix-dollars annually for destroying illegally planted clove trees in his domain.
