The small fort of Dannex, or Morgenster (Morning Star) guarded the Dender nutmeg plantation on the northern coast of the island of Lonthor. It was built in 1626 on the recommendation of Governor Willem J. Admiraal. All the small forts built on Lonthor around this time had a weak construction. The hardwood beams soon went rotten, as a result of which the forts soon collapsed. The fortifications were intended to help keep the rebellious plantation slaves under control.
