Company merchants often negotiated the purchase of slaves at Pipeli port. This port city was the first port of call for VOC ships in Bengal. Until 1635 the headquarters of the Company in Bengal was located at Pipeli, but because of the unhealthy climate it was decided to relocate the main base to Houghly. Pipeli remained an import and export centre for this part of Bengal.
