In 1721 the VOC built a fort in Delagoa bay, on the River Maputa. This fort was named Lijdzaamheid, or 'Endurance', in 1726. It was intended as a base for gold and copper prospecting, but the region proved very unhealthy and there was a constant threat of pirates. In 1730 the fort was abandoned by the Company.
