Governor-General Van Imhoff built an estate south of Batavia which he named Buitenzorg. This became the country residence of the ruling Governor-General. It was customary for the departing official to sell the estate to his successor for a fixed sum. In the 19th century one of the world's leading botanical institutions, the famous Bogor Botanical Gardens, was created on this estate.
