Buffeljagsrivier

On the Buffeljagsriver, southwest of the Cape, the VOC maintained a cattle post named 'Riet Valleij'. The first recorded mention of this name dates back to 1730. Riet Valleij represented the easternmost outpost of the VOC at the Cape. It was founded as a base for bartering cattle with the Koina tribes. Several kilometres away the VOC also established an administrative office, which functioned to bolster the position of the European colonists who had settled here. The post was sold in the late 18th century. Today the town is known as Rooipoort.
