Castello was a small island south of Cochin. The Portuguese built a redoubt here. The coconut plantations at Castello, then known as 'klappertuinen', were leased by the Company to the inhabitants of Cochin. The vessels that passed Castella and attempted the secret transport of pepper, were subject to inspection by the VOC.
