Fort Hammenhiel was situated on a small island halfway along the only water route to Jaffna. It represented an important part of the Jaffna defences. Because it had no supply of fresh water in times of siege the Portuguese were forced to surrender to the VOC in 1658 after the Company cut supply lines.
