The Company had a trading post in Jambi as early as 1615. The town was an important source of pepper. In the early 17th century the Company's main competitors were the Portuguese and the Chinese; but the English were also formidable rivals in the battle for pepper from Jambi. Nevertheless, in 1643 the VOC managed to obtain the pepper monopoly in exchange for protecting the town.
