Selangor, on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula, was captured by Jacob Pieter van Braam in 1784. The former ruler of Siak, Muhammad Ali, aided Van Braam in overrunning the town. The Company established two forts and a battery in the town: Altingburg, Utrecht en 'Van Braams batterij'. Muhammad Ali was appointed as a regent in exchange for protecting the rights of the VOC. No Chinese or other European ships were allowed to put at anchor and the tin had to be sold to the VOC at fixed prices.
