Kupang

Koepang on the island of Timor was captured in 1619. Fort Concordia was built in the first half of the 17th century. In 1655 the VOC's headquarters were relocated from Solor to Koepang, otherwise known as Fort Concordia. Koepang was to remain the VOC's headquarters for the Timor region until 1796. Relations between the Company and the Portuguese, who were also based on Timor, were extemely poor. During the 18th century the Company's employees were involved in the torture of the Timor people, while kidnapping and slave trading (which had existed previously) were the order of the day. The garrison fell into a deplorable state. For both the Dutch and the Portuguese, Timor was and remained a settlement of little importance.
