In the early 17th century the Company built a fortress called 'Wantrouw', or 'Distrust', on the island of Manipa. The name 'Distrust' says a great deal about the state of relations with the locals. The VOC collected the harvest at night for fear of Javanese traders and Ternate islanders, who had also laid claim to the island. This period of insecurity came to an end in 1621, when the Company finally conquered the island completely.
