Map of Borselen Island

Kanne, Carl Christiaan

Title Leupe: Plan van het eiland Borselen.

This unsigned map can be attributed to the engineer Carl Christiaan Kanne with certainty, on the basis of its general style, the compass indicator and certain other features. The were apparently made during his posting abroad in 1779 as inspector of Company buildings.

In view of the 1778 dating, it can be asserted that the map is a copy of an existing design drawing that was probably completed in Demerara and commissioned by Commander Van Schuylenburgh.

It concerns a complete reorganisation of Borselen which, in the absence of a legend and reference to the original mapmaker, is hard to precisely interpret.

North is lower left.
