Map of Cape Verde

Keulen, Johannes van

Title Leupe: Nieuwe Paskaart van al de Zoute Eylanden met al zyn opdoeningen, bayen, rivieren, drooghten en diepten.

This map shows the 'salt' islands, that is Cape Verde. Given the patent claimed by the publisher and cartographer van Keulen, the map must have been printed between 1680 and 1695. The rhumb lines and depth rates used on the Mercator projection reveal the map was meant to be used for navigation. This is confirmed by the warning next to the island of São Vicente (top left on the map) which reads: “at night a ship could sink here". Neptune and his companions are shown in banderol, two baby mermaids with dead sea monsters appear above the scale-bar at the bottom left and three ships are visible at sea.

Scale-bar of 13 German miles = 133 ‘strepen’.
