Map of the Corentijne River

Spiering, Johan Hendrik Carel

Title Leupe: Kaart van een gedeelte van de rivier Currantine Rivier met een daar aan gelegen stuk land tot een station voor de Moravische Broeders.

This map shows the location of the Hernhutter mission post Ephraïm on the Corentijne. The land for the first settlement on the lower course was a Government grant. After the post was founded in 1759, Ephraïm only existed briefly; it had to be closed in 1763 in connection with the great slave uprising in neighbouring Berbice. A year later, the Moravian Brothers established a new settlement higher up the Corentyne, called Hoop or De Hoop.

North is lower left.

Scale-bar of 7 Holland Miles = [approximately 1 : 170,000].
