Map of Montreal

Jefferys, Thomas / Cole, B.

Title Leupe: A Plan of the Town and fortifications of Montreal or Ville Marie in Canada.

This city plan of Montreal delineates the area between the St. Lawrence river to the east (bottom of the map) and steep cliffs to the west (top of the map). The surrounding fortifications, individual buildings and streets are noted, as are the cultivated fields above the cliffs. The reference numbers relate to the article The Importance of Montreal in the December 1758 issue of the rare Grand Magazine of Magazines. The map strikes a contrast with the work of the Dutch cartographer Samuel Holland a decade after.

Scale of 240 English yards = 66 ‘strepen’.
