Heneman, Johan Christoph von

Title Leupe: Kaart van een gedeelte der Colonie Essequebo.

During his second visit to Surinam, between the end of 1772 and 1778, Johan Christoph Heneman was posted to Demerara and Essequibo for some one-and-a-half years in 1774 and 1775.

On the orders of the WIC, he explored the possibilities for establishing a better defence system in these colonies and drew up a project plan for a canal connection between the two rivers. This maps shows the location of the islands in the Essequibo estuary. It also elaborates the existing and yet to be cultivated lots on the west bank of the Essequibo River. It projects nurmerous fortresses too, among which the later Fort Zeelandia.

On other maps of Heneman from this period, plans are developed for reconstructing the posts on these islands.

Scale-bar of 4000 Rhineland rods = 184 ‘strepen’ [approximately 1 : 82,200].
