Map of Philadelphia

Lotter, Matthew Albert

Title Leupe: A Plan of the City and Environs of Philadelphia.

The first edition of this plan of Philadelphia from 1752 served to promote William Penn's new city on the Delaware. With the American Revolution raging on the decades afterwards, maps of this centre of revolt were popular all over Europe, including the Dutch Republic. Hence, several publishers in and outside England reissued the Scull and Heap map, among whom Lotter. He updated the place names and environs of the City and moved Heap's elevation of the statehouse from the top to the bottom of the plate. The original grid plan for the city remains intact as are the references to 'country seats' and the limited road network.

Scale-bar of 2 m. = 76 ‘strepen’.
