Map of Pomeroon

Chollet, Louis

Title Leupe: Caerte van Ponmaron.

This map of the re-colonisation of the Pomeroon dates from the era of Governor Willem August Sirtema, baron of Grovestins (1791-1795).

In view of the verso notes and the fact that the numbering of the parcels of land starts at 61 it is probable that the map constitutes part of a larger, multi-sheet map of the estates existing in 1793 and those projected for the coastal regions between the Demerara and the Pomeroon.

A coastal military post on the estuary of the Moroko Creek (‘Morocco Ck’) has been drawn in.

Under British rule the period of sustained economic growth continued but the plans shown here did not materialize.

In 1805 Louis Chollet entered into partnership with his fellow surveyor J.H. Wiedeman; see in this connection his map of the coastal region of Berbice, VEL1575.

Scale-bars of 3000 Rods = 114 ‘strepen’ (approximately 1 : 100,000).

A copy of this map, VEL1544A, has not been separately included in this database.

Taken from: vide receuil Essequibo en Demarary 2e halfjaar anno 1793 no. 9 (met extra potloodverwijzing 1792-1).
