Map of Virginia and Florida

Hondius, Jodocus

Title Leupe: Virginiae item et Floridae, Americae Provinciarum Nova Descriptio.

On this map Hondius combines John White's map of Virginia and Jacques Le Moyne's map of Florida. The wide overview he thereby created set a standard which would only be surpassed by Ogilby-Moxon "Discription of Carolina" around 1672. Some adjustments of Le Moyne's work occurred, for instance the large lake above the two Indian figures was originally placed in a southwesterly direction from the mouth of the River May. This created confusion which lasted for nearly 150 years. Three sea monsters roam the sea, as do two European ships and one indigenous vessel. A turkey and two deer are found on land. The cartouches next to the title show two indigenous villages.
