Map of Virginia and Florida

Blaeu, Wilhelm (Jansz.)

Title Leupe: Virginiae Partis Australis, et Floridae Partis Orientalis, interjacentiumque regionum Nova Descriptio.

This is an adjustment of Hondius’ map of the same region, which can be found under VEL1401. The map covers the area from Jamestown in the north to roughly the present-day border between Georgia and Florida in the south. Competition between France and England was steep there and their coat of arms are used to show who claimed what. Next to these political divisions, Blaeu also corrects some geographical features like Virginia’s coastline. Based on some of the placenames used, Gerritsz’s map of the area from about 1631 appears to have been the basis of these improvements. The hinterland lakes were, however, conjectural.

Scale-bar of 19 German miles = 60 ‘strepen’.
