Map of plantations on both banks of the Pomeroon River

Chollet, Louis / Burght, J. van der

Title Leupe: Carte de l'arpentage et relevé d'une partie de la riviere de Ponmaron et Cote de la Mer adjacent, ainsi que descriques de Morocco, Wakapoe et Ikioni etc.

This map of the re-colonisation of the Pomeroon dates from the era of Governor-General Willem August Sirtema, baron of Grovestins (1791-1795).

This map depicts the further planned reclamation areas, canals (b, c, d) and fortifications (a), as well as land reserved for a new city (A) where the Pomeroon converges with the Wakapau Creek.

Chollet collaborated with the surveyor J. van der Burght to create this map.

A general map of Essequibo, produced by the latter surveyor also exists; see NA 4.AANW1473.

A coastal military post on the estuary of the Moroko Creek (‘Morocco Ck’) has been drawn in.

Under British rule the period of sustained economic growth continued but the plans shown here did not materialize.

In 1805 Louis Chollet entered into partnership with his fellow surveyor J.H. Wiedeman; see in this connection his map of the coastal region of Berbice; see VEL1575.

This is a copy of VEL1545.

Scale-bar of 1500 Rods = 116 ‘strepen’ [approximately 1 : 48,700].

Taken from: missive of Governor-General Si[rtema van Grovestins] 19 August 1794 kohier 800 no. 171 pp. 428-461.
