Vries was despatched by the VOC in 1643 to explore the regions north of Japan. This map is a copy of the result of his expedition.
The map was drawn by Vries in 1643 and copied between 1665 and 1668, probably in the studio of Johannes Vingboons.
The map is taken from the Blaeu-Van der Hem Atlas.
