Maros

The region of Maros, through which a river runs by the same name, was situated in the southern Sulawesi interior, to the north of the city of Macassar. Maros was at the head of the kingdoms of Bonthain, Boela Comba and Bera. Around 370 native villages fell under the authority of Maros. The VOC occupied the region in 1668 following a conflict with the people of Macassar. The Company already had an outpost on the Maros River, guarded by a simple wooden fort. A resident had been appointed as vice merchant, and was charged with monitoring the area along with several soldiers.
