Nallur

Sri Lanka

Nallur was situated several kilometres outside Jaffna. A seminary funded entirely by the VOC opened there in 1692. Large numbers of Ceylonese attended. This was mainly a reflection of the VOC's policy decision in 1690 to employ only those locals who were proficient in Dutch. Besides offering religious education, the seminary aimed to turn its pupils into 'little Dutchmen'. It closed in 1722.
