Newland

South Africa

The post of Nieuwland (Newlands) dates back to 1656 when Commander Van Riebeeck attempted to supply the Company with grain using the Cape's own resources. He ordered that the lands behind Table Mountain be tested as to their suitability for growing barley and oats. The experimental crops showed the region was suited to a more ambitious agricultural project. In 1658 a large grain store was built there.
