Plan of the Tumble-down dick Battery

Anoniem / Anonymous

Title Leupe: Plan van verdediging van den Tommelendyk (Tumble-down dick).

The battery at Tumble-Down Dick Bay, about 3.5 kilometres northwest of Fort Oranje, was constructed in 1701 during the first term of office of Commander Isaac Lamont (1701-1704). Just eight years later the small fortification had already fallen into such disrepair that the French privateers who launched an attack on Sint Eustatius at the end of November 1709 were able to land there without encountering any resistance. The battery was once again set up and armed with eight cannon under Commander Isaac Faesch (1737-1740), mostly to try to stop the smuggling in Tumble-Down Dick Bay. This map gives an overview of the finished work and was sent to the Republic in 1740. The Corp de Garde on the landward side was the quarters for the garrison of the battery.
