The VOC regarded the presence of any rival European companies on the coast as a threat. The strategically situated French settlement at Pondicherry threatened the Dutch Company's domination of the market. The VOC besieged the town and captured it in 1692, but had to return it to France five years later at the Treaty of Rijswijck.
