Together with Sukadana, Pontianak was the Company's biggest diamond supplier. The VOC had no trading relations with this town in the 17th century and it was not until 1778 that a residency was installed there. Besides diamonds, Pontianak supplied gemstones and wax. Fabrics shipped by the VOC from India were in great demand here.
