Project plan for a new fort at Grote Berg

Burmania, Gemme Onuphrius van

Title Leupe: Plan van de Willemstad en het fort Amsterdam op het Eyland Curaçao.

This drawing is part of a series from 1754 of detailed site and project maps of the most important existing defensive works on Curaçao. These maps served as annexes to the progress reports about the execution of Van Burmania’s plan, which also included the strongholds in the outer bays, sent by the director to the board. This plan was drawn three years prior to the submission of Van Burmania’s report. It consists of a ground plan and profile of a fort projected on the location called Grote Berg (Great Mountain). This typical trace italienne fort does not, however, appear to have been built as no remains were found on the location.

Scale-bar of 20 Rhineland Rods = 70 ‘strepen’.
