Riviersonderend

South Africa

This river, which carries the same name to this day, was so called because it fed into the Breederivier and thus never came to an end. During the 18th century free burghers settled in the smaller VOC posts such as 't Ziekenhuis, Tijgerhoek and Zoetemelks Valleij. The Company's land muster-rolls fail to record these posts separately. In this region, which supplied the Company with wood and livestock, there were two Koina tribes: the Chainouqua in the west and the Hesseuqa in the east.
