Salatiga was a town situated in the Javanese interior, between Oenarang and Carta Soura. In Salatiga, which at the time was larger and more densely populated than Oenarang, farming was the most important economic activity. It was here the VOC built the fort 'de Herstelling' or 'Hersteller'. From 1765 onwards around 25 to 30 VOC employees were stationed at Salatiga.
