Salayar

Saleyer was an elongated island separated from the southern Sulawesi peninsula by the Saleyer Strait. This island was traditionally subject to the king of Ternate, but subsequently came under the Company's authority. Saleyer was known for its forests and its cotton growing. The VOC built a fort there by the name of Defensie. Following the conquest of Maccassar in 1667 the VOC forbade other merchants to trade east of Saleijer.
