Fort

Schenectady, fort

Surprisingly, the village of Schenectady does not seem to have been palisaded until several years after it was founded in 1661, even though it was regarded as the north-eastern frontier of New Netherland and, subsequently, New York. Whenever fears of a French invasion surfaced, plans were drawn up to equip the village with some form of defence. A blockhouse had apparently been constructed by 1675.
