Seekoeivlei

South Africa

The VOC outpost of Rietveld was also known as Zeekoe Valleij. It lay east of Sandvlei, on the False Bay coast. The outpost mainly offered work to farm labourers. In 1751 they were given an additional task: to report those people carrying weapons. This was because the wild animals on the Cape Flats needed to be protected. Slaves with weapons had to be imprisoned, for otherwise they could learn to become self-supporting by hunting.
