The southern defending walls of Batavia are shown here. These walls stretched from the Hollandia bastion to the left to the Gelderland bastion shown in the distance to the right.

The Nieuwpoort, or New Gate, was accessed via the bridge over the Stadsbuitengracht.

Depicted left is a slave woman serving drinks to men seated under a tree smoking their long Dutch pipes.
