Weligama

Sri Lanka

Beligao, was the name the Portuguese gave to Weligama, situated in southern Ceylon between Gale and Matara. Due to its favourable situation on a bay to the south of the island, Weligama was used by the VOC as a guardpost. Cinnamon was grown on a large scale in the surrounding region, but the area also produced many roof and floor tiles and bricks for the VOC.
