Coastline profiles of Porto Santo (Portugal)
On the 14th of May 1598, the Vriesland – part of the Second Expedition to the East Indies organized by the Oude Compagnie – sailed in between the islands of Porto Santo and Madeira. In his Journal the helmsman (stuurman) Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck included a drawing of the coastline of the island of Porto Santo when seen in south east to eastern direction at about 8 miles from the observer. The next day, after having passed it, he drew the island again. now as seen in a north to eastern direction at about 6 miles from the observer.
