Bird's eye view of Nagasaki
Anoniem / Anonymous
Screen depicting a bird's eye view of Nagasaki and the island of Deshima.
It is one of six screens, including NagasakiVI35B.
Deshima is depicted on the right, with the temple of Shufukuji in the centre. On the other screen (NagasakiVI35B) belonging to this series one can see a foreign vessel next to which the word 'ekeresu' has been inscribed: in the bay of Nagasaki.
The date and artist are not known, but it is thought to have been painted around 1673, when the English vessel the 'Exeter' (?) visited Nagasaki. The painting style is reminiscent of the 'rakugairakucuu' style; it is assumed that the artist was a so-called canoe painter from Kyoto, and not a native of Nagasaki.
