Achchuveli

Sri Lanka

Phillipus Baldaeus, a clergyman employed by the VOC, resided at Achiavelli during the second half of the 17th century. He commissioned a native of Achiavelli to write the Gospel story in Sanskrit. This translation was aimed at propagating Christianity among the local population. Around 500 pupils attended the school attached to the church. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
