Bacan

Indonesia

Fort Barneveld on the island of Bacan was captured by the VOC from the Spanish in 1609. From that point on the island's production of cloves could only be sold to the Company. In 1682 the sultan of Bacan sold a number of islands to the VOC for 700 rix-dollars, that is, 1750 guilders. On one of these islands, Obi, the VOC built Fort Den Briel. The sultan also received 80 rix-dollars annually for destroying illegally planted clove trees in his domain.
