Bimlipatnam was ringed by large tracts of land given over to rice fields. These were the principal source of rice for Ceylon. Here, as elsewhere on the Coromandel Coast, the VOC was faced with local rulers who controlled the rice trade. The Company closed its office temporarily in protest at the high prices. Trade was halted altogether after Mogul invasion of Golconda in 1687.
