Dassen Island lies in Saldanha Bay, above Robben Island. It was situated roughly 100 kilometres north of the Cape colony and was used as a staging post for passing VOC ships. In particular, large numbers of seals were caught there. At the end of the 17th century a military post was set up on the island.
