Draft for the rebuilding of the commander's residence

Draft for the rebuilding of the commander's residence

Title Leupe: "Schetstekening van een commandantswooning" in Suriname."
This drawing by Wollant relates to a plot due west of the Governor’s residence; letter (D) on the 1775 ground plan on VELH614. On this land, an older brick dwelling housed the so-called Commandement or Commandery between 1743 and 1777; the official residence of the commander-in-chief of the garrison in the service of the Surinam Society. The Commandery was extended in 1775, but two years later it burnt down completely and an attempt was made to design a new residence with outbuildings for the commander. This was largely done by the draughtsman Hunter, but Wollant appears to porpose his own design here. Among other things this contains a new gallery and second floor. Eventually the project was called off; instead in 1786 the building of the Government Secretariat arose a little farther to the east on the same premises, also designed by Hurter.
At the rear side the following is written: ‘No.17, Register 17, part 1, folio 89.’ The map is marked as follows: ‘Depôt des cartes, plans et journaux de la Marine’.
Scale-bar 1 : 84 of 7 Rhineland feet for 1 ‘duim’.
