Drakenstein

South Africa

Drakenstein, the name of which derives from the visit paid to the region by Baron van Rheede tot Drakenstein in 1685, was founded in that same year. Between 1685 and 1690 many French Huguenots settled here. For this reason most of the farms in the district carry French names such as La Motte, Bien Donné and Rhone. It was a prosperous district where agriculture was the most important activity. The area's principal products were grain, fruit and wine.
